The Nikon D2x is the Scanout digital camera body of choice. I have a few, and it provides me with the quality images I need for my work. Since shifting from the Nikon F5 film camera in 2003, and going completely over to digital SLR, I have been through the whole range of available cameras. Believe me, the D2X is the “Best in Class”. I never leave home without at least two of these great digital work horses.
Nikkor 17-55mm DX is a great all-round lens, which I find myself using 40% of the time. The quality of this lens is amazing and it's rugged enough to handle the workload in any situation, which is critical in my line of work.
Nikkor 70- 200mm DX VR is the lens I find myself using another 40% of the time. Since the introduction of this lens it has had a home in my travel bag, and I would not think of traveling without it; guaranteed!
Nikkor 10.5mm DX is a great super wide angle lens that I really like to include on my assignments. It offers the ability to get close enough to touch your subject, yet offers razor sharp images. This fisheye lens offers the unique ability to straighten the lines using Nikon Capture, but I much prefer to align my subject matter in a manor that doesn’t exaggerate the fisheye look, yet offers a super wide perspective. I think you will enjoy the images this lens allows me to capture.
Sigma 15mm Fisheye is currently the only non-Nikkor lens I carry when on assignment. Though it is technically a fisheye lens, it shoots almost flat on the D2X body, and the quality is simply amazing regardless of the manufacturer. I always have one tucked away in my travel bag.
Nikkor 300mm 2.8, is one of the lightweight telephoto lenses that actually fits in the LowePro Dryzone that I always carry on assignments. The quality of this lens is legendary, but ergonomics is what allows me to carry this workhorse in the field. Its compact shape is as important as its world class quality to me, so it always finds a place in my travel bag.
Nikkor 60 and 105 macro lenses gets you close up and razor sharp! I carry at least one of these lenses on every assignment. Their compact size often allows me to take them both and then select the better macro for the task at hand.
The SB800 and off camera cable are a great combination, that allows me to create the perfect shadow and/or contrast to my subject. The SB 800 is the first DX flash that works like a regular TTL flash for digital cameras, and never leaves my travel bag. In fact I carry as many as 4 of these flashes’ when on assignment and also use them for my underwater photography.
Pocket Wizards allows me to utilize flashes where previously there was not an opportunty. The creativity that this devise allows me is staggering and also permits me to capture images that normally would not have been possible. Because they are UHF I can use this system to trigger my camera at long distances, which is another great bonus.
Subal has the best quality underwater housings on the market today, which allows me to use my D2X and a wide selection of ports and flashes while providing 100% waterproof environment. As far as I am concerned there is no real competition for this valuable piece of equipment.
Lowepro DryZone 200 is the best insurance for my valuable equipment. It keeps the contents bone dry, it is very comfortable to carry, it offers great padded protected for the contents and best of all it floats. And I have floated my packs more than once. There just isn’t a better pack when it comes to adventure photography in my opinion.
Stormcase builds cases in all shapes and sizes. I count on them to transport a lot of my gear when traveling by car, bus, truck, helicopter, boat, aircraft or any other mode of transportation. As long as it is in a Stormcase I don’t have to worry about it arriving damaged. There are a lot of cases on the market, but only one Stormcase!
