Image of _DSC0646It’s great working close with Nikon, and yes, since I’m a Nikon Ambassadour I get my hands on the newst equitment before you do. What´s even better is that Nikon let you be honest when writing or speaking about their products. But first let me say, this review is not one of the technical technical, laboratory reviews, that takes you deep into every chip, and wire of the camera and all the other metaphysics... This review is, me as a user, checking out how the files work within post production and if we can please our clients with the “end produckt” from the camera.

Just before I left for Havana, Cuba, I got my first sample of Nikon D300s. As a D3, D3x and D700 user, it was kind of a step down, But I'm the first to admit that DX cams, like the D300 and D90, are more handy to use, when you travel light and have to fly under the radar <not looking for attention> for some reason. Also for location scouting with a 18-200 mm it’s a perfect deal.

I must admit that D90, has become my favourite in the DX range, because it’s smaller, and it has D-Movie. D- movie is absolute fantastic for us who do smaller video clips, as well as macro, tele, and wide angles scenes. But also when you want scenes with lo depth…

I know, some times it takes like forever until I come to the point... D300s...man oh man.... back to Havana. What a great City. I had a 10 days shoot with a major Fly fishing brand on the North side of the Island. And used a few days in each end of the shoot to recover from the flight, as well as do the start shoot for D300s here. The pictures we are making, is for marketing use in consumer magazines and on the web. We can’t just shoot products in use at a location this time, its important to build it as a story, and that started in Havana. So on my whole Havana shoot I used nothing but the D300s.

Yes, Havana, flying under the radar.... I'm sure tech wise I could have got better files with D3x and FX optics. But I would never get the shots I needed in so short time. This time I was working with one housing and 2 lenses. 14-24 (OK, couldn't let that baby go), and 18-200 the range in one lens gives you a huge work space... and you’re fast. To much gear draws to much attention, and you don´t get the real story. As with this stuff you blend in...

Working with web and social media there are always those things that will look better on video. The only hitch on prior models is that sound was not the best. Having a small external mic is the whole difference, weather you can use it or not.

I used a Røde mic, small, handy, goes right in the hot shoe, and by placing the sound levels on “Lo” gave me better sound than what I hoped for. So good work Nikon!

August in Havana is warm. 40*C in the shade. AND humid. Actually, so humid that my iPhone said “god night”, and didn't turn it self back on until I was in Paris on the way home. But the D300s kept up with the heat and humidity! The camera also took some beating in the streets, as well as a few tropical showers….

As far as post production goes, the files are good condition as always. You can’t push the ISO as high as the FX format cams, but you can’t expect that... can you? Works well up to 640-800 for what we do...

I like writing blogs, but this time I’ll let the pictures and the small sample video speak for them selves…...hope you like them!
